Assorted ramblings

Watching grass grow is as exciting as, well, watching grass grow.  But there's also something soothing about watching a newly planted lawn sprout and fill in.  Our little front yard is making good progress.  Except for the patch of weeds in the middle.

As you all might have noticed, I tend to use the term "blonde moment."  That's because I am (and always have been) a blonde.  And all the blondes I know are damn smart.  However, I truly lived up to my hair color the other day.  Hamburger and I were talking about hybrid cars.  How expensive they are, what kind of gas mileage they get, blah, blah, blah.  And I ask HB how many miles/gallon an all electric car gets.  Go ahead.  Laugh.  He certainly did.

Almost all of my friends have kids.  I had a wonderful lunch yesterday with one of the few who doesn't.  I had such a great time.  We had lunch and sat and talked for two hours.  Not about anything in particular, just one of those long, rambling conversations on a nice, summer day.  Only problem is, she will most likely be moving to San Diego at the end of the year.
In contrast, I had lunch with two of my closest friends from high school a few weeks ago.  And they had their kids with them.  Cute kids, and they weren't a problem, but it reinforced how little I have in common with them anymore.  I asked one when she was planning on going back to work, and she said she wasn't sure if she would, since she couldn't imagine leaving her son.  They wanted to hear all about my trips, since they don't travel anymore.  And then we kinda ran out of things to talk about.  :-(

My mom mentioned the other day that she's ready to start thinking about our next big adventure.  We're thinking Spring of 2007, and so far the candidates are eastern Canada and the South (the US's South).  I don't want to spend 11-12 hours on a plane any time soon (and 2007 counts as soon), and I want to go somewhere I've never been.  Although, there's this company that does river cruises in Europe...

What do you or she consider to be Eastern Canada? I ask since I live in Eastern Canada (New Brunswick). :)

I was thinking we could fly into Montreal, spend a few days there, and then rent a car and explore New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and P.E.I. I haven't done much reading yet to see if that's a worthwhile plan, but OMG, the pictures I've seen are gorgeous.
Thoughts?

Sounds like a great trip! :)

Definitely get some stuff from the tourist bureaus of all three provinces if you plan on doing that. There's a lot of stuff to see so you'll have to plan your route.

*ahem* New Brunswick is the most beautiful, of course. ;)

I hope you plan on, at the very least, 2 weeks but 3 would be better. It's not a short drive if you're going to be doing much stopping and visiting.

You really need to read the brochures to see what type of thing is here you'd be interested in visiting because there's quite a variety.

I've been all over PEI and it's pretty in a flat not-many-trees kind of way and they have a lot of beach scenery.

New Brunswick is forest land, rivers and valleys and is very beautiful if you like the wilder look. It's actually a lot like parts of Maine if you've ever visited there.

Nova Scotia is almost an island and is joined to us by a thin strip of land (not THAT thin - you can't see the coastline or anything). I've seen photos of Cape Breton Island which is part of NS and it's got gorgeous scenery. I haven't been there yet myself but it's a place hubby and I are definitely going to visit one day. :)

If I can be of help to you, let me know. I'll do what I can. :)

Thank you! For both the info and the offer of future help. :-)
I haven't talked to my mom a whole lot about what kind of trip she wants, but after London and Paris, I'm all for small towns and beautiful scenery.

It's amazing how kids kind of take over your life. I really try hard not to talk about mine all the time, to maintain an interest in current events, life in general--but it's surprisingly hard. It's really unfortunate that people so often split into the kids/no kids groups, even when they don't mean to or want to.

I hope I didn't come across as kid-negative.
I have another friend who has two kids who is amazingly good at what you just described. I think the thing is, on occasion she gets a sitter for her children and goes out without them. And we talk about all sorts of different things, including the children. If she needs to bring one of the children, she'll ask if it's ok.
Whereas the two friends I was talking about earlier, every time I see them it is with the kids. Which somehow makes them (the kids) the focus.

Oh, no--I could actually relate to what you said, just from the other side. It's just weird how easy it is to slip into talking only about your kids, being totally kid-centric.

"It's just weird how easy it is to slip into talking only about your kids, being totally kid-centric."

I try not to be - that's why, for example, I've made LJs for my kids so what's happening to *them* is happening *there* mostly.
